Solar Panels: the city has installed about 400 solar panels throughout the city. Some solar panels on homes generate more energy than needed for the house so it provides revenues for those owning the houses by selling the electricity.

"Passive houses" are homes that are able to reduce energy consumption for heating 80-90% by warming your apartment with your own body and heat generated while cooking

1. After WWII, the city decided to rebuild their town in accordance to old street networks with some small differences. The streets were widened not for the purpose of more cars, but to make room for trams and a cycle path network, as well, the entire city center is declared as a pedestrian area.

Through ALL of Germany, 70% of waste generated today is recovered and reused. This means a reduction of waste disposal in Freigburg, from 140,000 tonnes in 1988 to 50,000 tonnes in 2000.

Structure of the City

Ecological principals must influence the architectural design and urban design...buildings should make use of passive solar energy, solar collectors, and photo-voltaics.

Neighborhoods must contain all the essential infrastructure such as schools, shops, health care, senior services, work places, restaurants, churches etc.

There must be balanced social structure: social housing must be balanced with market rate housing in neighborhoods

There must be neighborhoods built to a human scale with defined spaces
