Became Vice President in 1800

Fought Alexander Hamilton in a Duel in 1804

Fatally wounded Hamilton

Conspiracy Events

-Burr's goal wa to separate western US from the rest of the nation

- James Wilkinson was main co-conspirator; exposed Burr to Jefferson which led to his arrest

Leased Texas territories from Spain to begin his plans

Plan was for western succession and for the capture of Washington, D.C.

Began to store supplies and gather volunteers near Mississippi River

Governor of Ohio grew suspicious of activities on Ohio River; took action with militia and raided island with supplies for operation

planned to provoke rebellion among Spain in mexico, conquer land, and create country ruled by himself

Jefferson warned of conspiracy; Wilkinson exposed Burr's plan to JEfferson

Burr was arrested, but John Marshall dropped case because of a lack of evidence

Significance & Results

Burr went downhill after conspiracy; tried to gain support from France and Britain for a revolution in Mexico, but denied

John Marshall told Jefferson to testify in trial, but he refused. Showed the independence of each branch of government
