Women's Human Rights
Main topic
Examples
Female Genital Mutilation
This is a big issue because women's genital organs are being removed from them. It is a violation of human rights and this ties in with religion, as it very immoral to do so. The emotional and physical impact is very major on these women. Women go through so much pain and this is against many of their religions. They are stuck with no choice and cannot stand up for themselves even if they try because they don't have as much power as men.
Political Participation
Women's leadership and political participation are very restricted around the world. They are underrepresented as voters and face many challenges to be a part of the political life. In 2011 the UN General Assembly made a point saying " Women in every part of the world continue to be largely marginalized from the political sphere, often as a result of discriminatory laws. The UN has even pointed out how unfair this is and that the government needs to take a woman's perspective too. I am a firm believer that it the political system is not equal, because if one woman isn't allowed to vote how is she supposed to live in a place where her country is unfair to her.
Acces To Education
A number of females around the world do not have the privilege of attending school because of poverty, but also because of gender discrimination. A recent study shows there are 31 million young girls that are not in school. This is a huge number, and this is completely unfair because girls deserve to learn just as much as boys. This is a huge issue and needs to be taken care of as soon as possible,
Violence Against Women
Violence against women is a major issue around the world. Global estimates that 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual violence or physical by their partner. 30% of the women murders are committed by men. This type of violence negatively affects a women physical, mental, and sexual health. This is very inhuman but it is likely women will experience these things because they are not offered a good education or have been abused in the past.
Rape And Sexual Assault
A perfect example for this topic is that many people say India has abused women rights due to rape. In India the percentage has increased by 82% for the number of rapes/ assaults on women. It is not fair that a woman who has been raped is not even able to speak about it because nobody will believe her. It is sad to see that even if she were to share her story the police could be bribed and the girl would just lose her respect in the community. A recent poll has shown that 50% of Indians believe that a woman still deserves a beating. This is a big issue that needs to have a solution so that all these rates go down. Women deserve justice.
Gender Wage Gap
Women today are still earning less today compared to men counterparts in the workplace. As a female myself I cannot live with this rule. It is unfair how men get paid more and are treated better than women. The government needs to change this so that both men and women are payed the same amount.
Why Is This A Civic Issue?
This is a civic issue because women are not treated fair. Men get a higher pay in many countries which is not promoting gender equality. In some parts of the world women are victims of human rights abuses. For example, Women can't take part in decision making which affects their life. Women are also denied for political participation and fair representation. Civic means the study of rights. If women aren't given the same rights as men this defiantly makes it a civic issue. In many countries women suffer from domestic violence. Also, they suffer from genital mutilation and honour killings. As I have mentioned above this is not fair to women because they deserve to have the same amount of power as men.
Where Is It Happening
?
All around the world
Developing Countries such as: India, China, and
Africa. These countries are where women rights are a huge civic issue. This is because of how strict their government system is. Also, these countries do not value women as much as they should. They are mistreated and they do not have fair rights.
