Job Description

Civil engineers work for different types of companies such as construction, manufacturing companies, government... Civil engineers help design and build the structures we use every day such as skyscrapers, hospitals, bridges, power plants... Civil engineers use their knowledge of math and science to make sure buildings and transportation systems are safe.

Some Sample Courses are Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics, Steel and Concrete Design, Materials in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Structural Analysis, Transportation and Traffic Engineering.

Professional Designation Possible: PEng (Professional Engineer)

This course offers a 4 year undergraduate degree AND it also offers a coop program.

You can also go further and get a masters degree and a PhD.

Required: Advanced Functions, Chemistry, Physics, English.
Strongly Recommended: Calculus & Vectors
Minimum Average: 74% (74% in all required science and math courses except Biology)

Based on Education

If you are a civil engineer with a 4 year bachelors degree, you can make around $80,000 a year. If you go further and get a masters degree it is possible to make around $140,000 a year. PhD is around $230,000 a year.

Based on Experience

If you've been a civil engineer for 1-2 years. you will probably make around $70,000. 2-5 is around $90,000. 5-10 is around $115,000. 10-15 is around $140,000. 15-20 is around $150,000 and 20+ years of experience is around $160,000 a year.

Work Conditions

Inside Office

Civil engineers spend most of their time in their offices. They do a lot of work on the computer and on the phone. They write reports and read blueprints.

Outside Onsite

Civil engineers also spend time outdoors when they do site inspections, oversee the construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings and other infrastructures.
