IEP Support
3 Prongs for Eligibility Determination Procedures
1. Meets Eligibility Requirements
2. Adverse Impact on Educational Performance
3. Need for Specially Designed Instruction
These prongs are important because without them,
we wouldn't know to be able to determine who does
and who does not get service. If these weren't here,
there would be chances for bias and favoritism.
Accessible IEPs for All
Everything should be child-centered.
It's not about the teachers or the parents.
It's about the child.
Co-teaching and team planning are important.
Nothing should be done independently
Develop relationships with other teachers and with
the students so that everyone can work together
properly
13 Special Education Categories
IDEA gives 13 categories of disabilities
that qualify children for Special
Education services
These categories are:
autism, deaf-blindness, deafness,
emotional disturbance, hearing
impairment, intellectual disability,
multiple disabilities, orthopedic
impairment, other health
impairment, specific learning
disability, speech or language
impairment, traumatic brain
injury, or visual impairment
It is important to have a solid list of these because
that way, we know who qualifies for IEP and special education services.
Developing IEP Goals
SMART Goals should be used
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-Bound
The SMART goals are important because
they give us parameters for creating
helpful and effective IEPs
