It refers to the type of listening we do when, for example, we need to find errors or determine differences between one passage and another.

Listening for gist

It refers to the occasions when we want to know the general idea of what is being said.

Listening for specific information

It refers to the occasions when we dont need to understand everything, but only a very specific part.

Inferential listening

This refers to the type of listening we do when we wish to know how the speaker feels.
