Electricity enters your home at 220 volts. 220 volts is used for some appliances like AC unit and washer. A regular outlet is 120 volts.

Individual Reading

Electrical devices rely on continuous supply of electric current. The difference between electronic and electrical devices is in the way that they use electric current. Electronics is the use of electric current to control, communicate, and process information. Electronics is based on electronic signals. An electronic signal is a varying electronic current that represents information. There are two basic kinds: analog and digital signals. They represent information in different ways. A current is varied smoothly to represent information. An analog signal varies in much the same way that temperature varies in a liquid-filled thermometer. In digital signals, pulses of current are used to represent information. Sound recordings also communicate information using electronic signals. Sound can be reproduced using an analog device such as phonograph or digital device such as a cd player. The analog signal is fed into an amplifier and then into a speaker, which changes the signal back into sound. When a CD spins, a beam of light scans the pits and flats. The light reflects from the flats but not from pits. That causes pattern of tiny flashes of light. Voices or music on AM or FM station are electronic signals carried by an electromagnetic wave. The sound waves produce a varying electric current. This current is an analog signal that represents the sound waves. It is sometimes called an audio. Electromagnetic waves can be used to carry images as well as sound. The transmission of the images and sounds on television is very similar to radio waves. Audio and video signals that make up the image on your television screen and are generated at a television station. Both are carried by electromagnetic waves. Communications satellites are also used to relay television signals. Each television contains a receiver that accepts video and audio signals. As in a radio, the carrier wave for each television station is at a specific frequency.

Reduces voltage to a level that can be used in the house (220 volts).

Uses step-down transformers to decrease the voltage of the current. This current is at a high voltage

Move the electric current generated from the power plant to the power substation.

Uses large step-up transformers to convert the generator's voltage up to extremely high voltage for long-distance transmission on the transmission grid.

Energy
Steam or some other form of energy is used
to rotate turbines.

Turbine
Rotating turbines cause generator to rotate.

Generator
Rotating generator creates electrical current.
