Reagan's Election

Republicans/Conservatives

Nixon and Eisenhower

Believed that the gov't shouldn't interfere with private property and business, taxes should be lower on the wealthy and religion was key

Criticized liberal domestic and foreign policies and blamed them for stagflation

Religious People

more groups like the Moral Majority sprouted that supported the bibles ways of family life and imposed their values on to what was once non political people

increased the number of voters and since religious people favored republican ideals the presidency the election favored a republican candidate

Political Climate

During the Cold War Era democrats and republicans worked towards the same goal of combating communism

liberal thinking was prominent in youth during the counterculture movement

Conservatives during the 70s started to push harder for their more conservative values and became the New Right

Vietnam War, Iranian Hostage Crisis, Oil Crisis, and Watergate caused distrust in gov't especially in Carter who was a democrat

As people started to migrate to suburban areas moderate liberals were discouraged by the recession which strengthened republican power

Democrats/Liberals

Presidents like Carter LBJ and Kennedy
