"The Stolen Party" by Liliana Heker

Acceptance

Rosaura is not accepted in the party at first

" You are not a friend of Luciana because I'm her cousin and I know all of her friends. And I don't know you." (Heker 2)

This quote shows how the kids are not accepting of Rosaura at first because she does not look physically as rich as the other kids.

This makes Rosaura feel unwelcome and makes her question if she should even be at the party. However, she is never ashamed of her mother and their relationship.

This teaches me that your physical appearance can have a huge impact on how people perceive your indentity and that you should be confident with your own identity.

Social Status

Rosaura is advised by her mother not to go to the party based on her social status.

" I don't like you going. It's a rich people's party." (Heker 1)

Rosaura's mother does not want her to go to the party because she feels that Rosaura will get made fun of and looked at different because her family is not as wealthy as the other kids.

Rosaura still wants to go to the party and tells her mother " Rich people go to Heaven too." This implies that Rosaura does not feel that her social status will affect her friendships and how much fun she can have at a party.

Rosaura's actions teach me that your social status and identity do not limit what you can achieve in life.

Loss of Innocence

Rosaura learns how social status can separate people even though it might not be obvious.

" You really and truly earned this. Thank you for all of your help, my pet" (Heker 5)

In this moment, Rosaura realizes that social status does impact social life and relationships some times. In this case, her kind gestures were payed with money, which shows how they view her as a lower class and thus treat her differently based on her social status.

Previously in life, Rosaura was naive to the fact that social status impacted how she is treated. She was innocent and she never realized that these type of things can separate people. This sitution made her realized that her social will impact how she is treated.

This situation shows me that there are certain things in life that are impacted by your identity.
