#7 We call upon the federal government to develop with Aboriginal groups a joint strategy to eliminate educational and employment gaps between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Canadians.

What results should be expected?

Will close the gaps of education and employment because more educated people will be able to get jobs and receive better opportunities to have a successful future - with the support of the government

More qualified people for jobs at a younger age due to a new group of people (aboriginals) entering the work force

Learning Theory

New information implemented into the eduction system about Native History leads to permanent changes in societies behaviour regarding the previous/current issues surrounding Aboriginals

How can it be addressed?

Put funding into adding technology into aboriginal education systems

Develop further learning strategies as well as get familiar with technology-this will allow them to enter jobs that require knowledge of technology

Courses are created for those that are currently out of school due to the employment gaps in families. Although they are working-they have little to no education which will prevent them from moving up in the working class and being financially stable, leading to the pattern being repeated through generations.

Children on reserves are extremely underfunded -They need extra help and support for education in all forms (Boyden, 2016)

This means we need more teachers! almost 50% less teachers in current aboriginal communities and reserves than non aboriginal communities

Implement further curriculum that addresses the struggles in Aboriginal communities and how we can help better the FUTURE- most lessons around it now focus on the past and what went wrong. My idea is to continue these lessons, as well as highlighting the idea of a brighter future and talking about opportunities and support systems for Aboriginal students that are available.

Why is it urgent?

Structural Functionalism: Society as a complex system based on the idea of balance. If one thing is lacking or suffering, it results in the suffering of the interconnection of systems

Suffering of education system = suffering of economy

Demographics: (population increasing along with Dependency load) Aboriginals are having more children with little to no education on reserves (some are forced to go to urban settings to receive this education). We need bigger schools to be able to provide for these children to close the gap of non educated youth in Canada. Indigenous youth need to be invested in as much as every other youth group in the country (Boyden,2016).

Lack of Employment for Aboriginal people

Remote economies are weaker

Lack of Success for Aboriginal students

49.9% of Registered First Nations on reserve have not completed high school. Nearly 6 out of every 10 students never do.

Students who aren't in school face disapproval from Non-Aboriginal people and are seen as deviant for not utilizing their given resources-although the education system is much less effective than that of Non-Aboriginal communities

Labelling Theory: Students and youth are set up to fail and discriminated against and become the label they have been given. Those who are In school lose motivation quickly, especially since those they surround themselves with are not in school. Their self identities and behaviour become influenced by the names, stereotypes they are classified as.
