Child discloses and staff has suspicion of abuse or neglect

When a child reveals potential abuse or neglect, the principal ensures that staff report the situation to the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) as mandated. If CAS finds no grounds for investigation, the principal ensures the call is documented and the child is monitored for any future issues.

Principal must ensure staff has contacted CAS under CYSFA duty to report

CAS decides there is a significant threat and sends someone to the school to interview and possibly remove the child
Principal meets CAS upon entry and confirms identity. A private room is arranged if the child is to be interviewed.

Prinicipal ensures safety and privacy of student is maintained during the interaction.

Principal ensures that the every step is documented and appropriate forms are filled out.

Principal ensures that the child is appropriately supported upon return to school and any updates to allowable contacts for the child are made and followed

CAS decides to open a file and follow up or provide resources to the family
Principal ensures that staff member documents the call properly, and fills in the relevant reports.

Principal ensures that the child is monitored and any future disclosures/concerns are reported to the same case file and preferably to the same worker.

CAS decides there is nothing to investigate at the time
