Isolationism
North America is so far from Europe so
they think that we should not get involved.
"We're over here, they're over there. We
should stay out of it".
This policy was practiced by
Canada and the U.S.
Failure of the
League of Nations
Italy and Japan invaded
nations.
Japan invaded Manchuria.
Italy invaded Ethiopia.
Hitler went against some
terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
Took over Austria, Rhineland and
invaded Czechoslovakia.
Treaty of Versailles
Treaty was very harsh
Had to pay for all damages
Accepted all blame for the war
Was forced to sign the Treaty
of Versailles.

Short Term Causes of WW2
Invasion of Poland
The world has no choose but
to respond to Hitler to stop
him.
WW2 Begins
September 10th, 1939 Canada declares war.
September 3rd, 1939 Britain and France declare war.
September 1st, 1939 Germany invades Poland.
Non-Aggression Pact
An agreement between Germany
and Russia not to attack each other.
This was to eliminate a
2 front war.
Alliances
Japan, Italy, and Germany formed the
Axis powers.
When alliances were formed, it got tense in
anticipation of another war.
The Great Depression
No one wanted to stop Hitler as
every country was in a depression.
Countries were still in dept
from WW1. So they had no
money.
Policy of Appeasement
This agreement was giving in to Hitler
letting him what he wants, in order to
avoid war.
This gave Hitler more power and
put him in a more powerful position
when WW2 began.
Munich Pact - 1938 (Agreement between
Germany, Britain, and France). This gave Germany
a part of Czechoslovakia.
Causes of the Great Depression
Buying Stocks on Credit
This was call "Buying on a Margin".
Stock Market Crash - October 29th, 1929 (Black Tuesday)
They would buy the stocks then sell them later and
return the money and keep all profits.
People borrowed money to buy stocks.
Too Much Buying
"Buy now, pay later" was the attitude of the time.
High Tariffs Cut off International Trade
Countries put high taxes on products from other countries in order to protect home industries.
Dependence on the U.S.
The U.S. was Canada's biggest trading partner but when its economy started to delcline they stopped buying.
Dependence on Primary Products
When world wide demand for these products dropped,many parts of Canada fell into deep economic trouble, especially,
the farms in the Prairies and the fisherman in the maritime.
Canada relied on a few products called staples, wheat
fish, mineral, pulp, and paper.
Over- Production and Over Expansion
Profits were spent on expanding factories
or building new ones.
