CAUSES OF WW1
MILITARISM
Definition: the governments desire or belief of maintaining a strong military force and to always have it prepared and use it aggressively to promote or defend national interests
Example: WW1 was prepared in advance. Before the war began Britainanrmany were racin to have the biggest militay and navy. many warships were made for the simple reason of who was better.
This helped start the war because Austria blamed Serbia for the murder of their Archduke. The war wouldn't of happened if they weren't so ready for war.
ALLIANCES
Definition: a formal agreement or treaty between two or more nations to conspire or team together for specific purposes.
Example: Austria being in alliance with Germany, Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria
This is a direct cause to WW1 because with all the nations in alliances if one got in a war it would escalate to almost every nation very quickly.
NATIONALISM
Definition: defined as feeling loyalty and pride in ones nation over other nations. One may describe their country as better then any other, or an intense for of patriotism.
Example: It was this pan-Slavic (Russian or Slavic people) nationalism that is said to have inspired the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, known to be a direct cause to WWI.
It was pan-Slavic nationalism that caused the assassination of Austria's Archduke.
IMPERIALISM>:
Definition: a policy of extending another country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force. Emperors acquiring and competing for power
Example: it caused colonies to be involved and for the militarise to control local governments.
This was a direct cause of WW1 because it caused tension between the inside and outside of Europe.
ARCHDUKE ASSASSINATION
On June 28, 1914, the Archduke and his wife were killed by Gavrilo Princip, this is what caused the war between Austria and Serbia. Germany, Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria were Austria's allies. Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States, Serbia's allies.
This was a direct cause to WW1 because it started the spiral of wars starting with Austria vs Serbia.
