Saul is an indigenous boy from northern
Ontario who is a part of the fish clan. Saul
is born in the 50s with a natural talent to
play hockey.

Saul's great grandfather

The reason behind the last name
Indian Horse, Saul's great grandfather introduced the horse to the Ojibway.

Saul's Mother
Mary

Mary's mental state is shot after
she loses her children at a young
age and being a residential school survivor.

John

John seems less affected by the early
loss of his children. John is also a residential school survivor.

Saul's grandmother
Naomi

Incredibly spiritual and down
to earth, Naomi follows the
Ojibway traditions much more
then everyone around her.

Saul's Brother
Benjamin

Benjamin was kidnapped at a young age
and forced to go into a white school.
Miraculously, he refinds his family after escaping the school.

Saul's Sister
Rachel

Rachel has a very similar story
to Benjamin. She was kidnapped
at a young age and forced into a
white school. However, she was
not as fortunate as Benjamin,
never escaping the school, never
to be seen again.

ST. JEROME'S

Father Quinney

Father Quinney allows
and accepts Saul's
departure of the residential
school to play on a hockey
team at a more competitive
level.

Sister Ignacia

Sister Ignacia throughout
the book, is depicted as a
cruel, narrow-minded woman.

Father Leboutilier

Father Leboutillier is a new priest. He is young and angers his colleagues with his friendly manner with the children. Father Leboutillier is also the man who would make the school hockey team. He would later admit to being an abuser.

MANITOUWADGE

Fred Kelly

Fred Kelly is the coach of Moose,
a indigenous hockey team. Father
of three, they all live in a mining town
named Manitouwadge

Howard

Howard is one of three of Fred's sons. Howard plays on the Moose with Saul.

Garrett

Garrett is one
of three
of Fred's sons.
Garrett
plays on the
Moose with Saul.

Virgil

The youngest of the three sons, Virgil was Saul's closest friend throughout the book.
Virgil is also the one who got Saul to continue playing hockey and develop to a NHL level player.

Martha

Martha, the mother of the three sons, was perpetuated as an incredibly kind person.

HOCKEY AND BEYOND

Jack Lanahan

Jack Lanahan is a NHL scout interested in Saul to recruit him in an NHL feeder team.

Ervin Swift

Ervin, or Erv is a farmer and widower who lives alone. Erv has a deep appreciation for Ojibway and their great storytelling capabilities. Erv decides to give an offer to Saul to work on the farm with him, including room and board.
