Freud's theories.
Background Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)
Promoted the concept of infantile sexuality
(Oedipus Complex).
The complex suggests that young boys are sexually attracted to their mothers and young girls are sexually attracted to their fathers; and that similarly, the children are in conflict with the parent of the same sex.
He is also the founder of psychoanalysis.
Freud's tripartite theory of the human personality
1. Ego: The conscious self.
The mediator between the other two
parts.
2. Id: Subconscious element.
Acts on impulses/instincts.
Wants immediate gratifaction.
The source of the LIBIDO.
3. Super-Ego: Similar to ones conscience,
except we aren't born with
this, it's an element of our
personality, formed by what
we are taught in society.
We learn rules about proper
behavior from our upbringing
and develop an understanding
of right and wrong
IN CONTRAST TO THE ID, THE SUPEREGO IS RATIONAL
