Cuba is situated at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico, lying south of Florida in the Caribbean Sea. The country has experienced significant political and economic shifts over the years.

Cuba and Soviet Union

The Soviet Union sent money, food and supplies to Cuba.But by 1991 goverment of the soviet Union collasped and could no longer help Cuba.
Near the 1960s, the soviets began sending military forces, including missiles, to Cuba, because the American navy found out and to prevent a war they remove the missiles they had sent.
As a communist country Cuba became an ally of the Soviet Union.

As a communist country

Had a big desire for freedom.
People often did not get the food, clothing, and medicine needed and because of this huge numbers of Cubans fled the island.
The goverment didn't allow the people to speak for themselves or to disagree with them because if they do they will be sent to jail.
The goverment took over private buinesses and land.

Before communism

Rebel groups began forming,one of their leaders was Fidel Castro, after lots of fights and two attemps to overthrow goverment he was finally succesful in 1959.
Once Cuba was the richest in the Caribbean it had many hotels, beaches and wonderful climate, but not all Cubans can share the countries wealth, because they earn little money.
Cuba was ruled by harsh leaders including Fulgencio Batista.

Location

Cuba lies south of Florida and in the Caribbean Sea.
It is located at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Exiles

Many Cuban exiles hope that the regime that follows Castro's will encourage better relations with the United States.
Cuban exiles had made succesful new lives in the United States, but they dream of returning to a free and democratic Cuba.
Cuban exiles have been leaving their country to the United States ever since Castro took power.

Cuba today

Cuba's economy is improving.
Castro is starting to allow some private ownership of buisnesses and is encouraging toursim and trade.
