Literature Circles

What do they look like?

Each group member has their own focus/role

Groups of 4-6 students

Students converse about a
shared text they have read

What prior knowledge do students have to have?

Students have learned about the different roles they must play in the literature circle and understand the roles are often blended

Students must know about Accountable Talk. (appropriate and meaningful forms of discussion)

What is the teacher's role?

Continually challenge students to deepen their critical literacy skills

Ongoing assessment

Models the different roles
that the students eventually
own (ex. Facilitator, Questioner,
Word Wizard, Connector)

Puts together a thoughtful
selection of texts for students
to choose from

How do you assess the students?

Ongoing observations of:
-articulation of ideas
-teamwork
-building new understanding

Have the students self-assess as well

What are the benefits of this
literacy strategy?

Collaborative - students are constantly sharing and building on each others thoughts and opinions

Reading through different lenses gives students the opportunity to consider many perspectives and points of view
