CHAPTER 3 Regret. When George is talking to Slim about the way he used to treat Lennie, there is a distinct sense of regret in the way he says it. George used to be very cruel to Lennie, because Lennie did whatever George said and never questioned anything. He could beat him up without Lennie even lifting a finger against him. But when George told Lennie to jump into the water and he almost died, he realized that Lennie deserved to be treated much better.

CHAPTER 3 Water is commonly known as a symbol of rebirth, and i think that when George pulls Lennie out of the water, it represented rebirth in the way George cared about and treated Lennie, because it was only then that George realized how loyal Lennie truly was, and how much George himself really cared about and needed Lennie.

CHAPTER 3 Lennie is completely loyal to George, and does whatever he tells him to do. He would do absolutely anything that George tells him to do and trusts him with his life. George on the other hand, could hardly care less about Lennie. He was always very cruel to Lennie and even caused him to almost kill himself. When George pulled Lennie out of the water, Lennie was extremely greatful towards George for saving him, even though George was the one that had almost killed him. I think that this was a moment when George realized that Lennie would always be there for him no matter what and that he truley cared about Lennie as well.
