Why must we support the use of dual language texts in the classroom?

When introducing new vocabulary have the word in the L1
or have the student find the translation

Find books and resources that are available in both languages

Show videos with subtitles in L1

Allow the student to write stories, letters, etc in their native language during Daily 5 or other writing activities

What are some of the specific benefits students can gain when teachers adopt this approach?

Higher self-esteem and confidence

Ability to share knowledge they
cannot express in English

How can teachers support parents with understanding the importance of a bilingual/multilingual student?

Invite parents in for interviews or to school performances
so they can see their student in an English environment

Show your support and respect for the L1 and the
family's culture

Use an interpreter or translator for messages sent home
and parent teacher meetings

Be open to questions, show student work,
explain your thought process and be honest
