How is it transmitted?
Polio is extremely contagious.
Polio is spread through human conact
The virus enters the body through the mouth from things such us contact with infected feces, and infected sneeze or cough, or putting a contaminated item in your mouth (a baby putting a toy in their mouth)
What are the symptoms of Polio?
1 out of 4 people will have flu-like syptoms
Sore throat
Fever
Fatigue
Nausea
Headache
Paralysis
Meningitis
Back and neck pain
Arm and leg stiffness
Muscle tenderness and spasms
Death
What is Polio?
Polio or poliomyelitis is a disabling and life threatening disease caused by the polio virus.
How is it treated/prevented?
There is no cure for Polio, but hospitals use things such as pain medications, good nutrition and physical therapy to keep patients as healthy and comfortable as possible.
To prevent a Polio breakout children are given a vaccine at 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months and 4 years.
