6 people are having dinner at Mike's Schofield house, his wife and daughter are on the table, so as the narrator and his wife, but there is also a man called Richard Pratt, a man that knows almost everything about wines, Mike loves to gamble with Richard Pratt in a game where Richard has to guess the name of the wine and the year of the harvest, but everything goes wrong when Richard puts an eye on Mike's daughter Louis, and wants her as the price of the gamble.

Richards don't care to gamble, so Mike increase the reward with money, but Richard doesn't want any money, he wants to marry Mike's daughter Louise instead
Louise doesn't like the bet, neither does her mom, but richard bets two of his properties.
After a long discussion Mike convinces his young daughter to accept the bet, then he starts the game by serving the wine to the guests and to Mr. Pratt
After drinking the wine, Richard Pratt says the correct name and year of the wine, winning the gamble, Louise can't believe what just happened and ask his dad for solutions
A servant comes to the table with a pair of glasses that were from Mr. Pratt, explaining that she found them on Mike's study, showing that Richard was there before Mike, and for that he was possibly cheating on the gamble
