Technology and Parent Communication

Blog

A place where people can voice their opinions,
talk about things that really matter to them, introduce
themselves.

Pros: Blogs can capture the parents' interest.
Writing a blog can help the parents feel closer
to the teacher, more like they really know the teacher.

Cons: Sometimes writing blogs can bring the
parents too close, blurring the lines between professional and personal

Newsletter

A newsletter can be published weekly
or monthly, online or on paper, keeping
parents informed of upcoming events,
important assignments, due dates for things,
expectations for assignments and projects.
A newsletter can also be a great place to
display the students' work and what they
have been learning.

Online Calendar Tool

Another way of keeping parents informed of due
dates for assignments, upcoming events, basically
what is due when on a weekly or monthly basis.

Email

Electronic mail that is sent over communications
networks.

Pros: Helps teachers communicate with parents
quickly and directly so that issues/problems can be
taken care of quickly. Also useful in helping parents
keep track of their child's progress in their academic
subjects.

Cons: Emailing can become constant and all-consuming,
causing parents to become too involved and sometimes
too pushy. Not all parents have access to an email account.

Class Website

A webpage created by the teacher and the students.

Makes class information and updates readily available
to parents. Helps students express their creative side
and learn valuable skills in designing web pages and
keeping them updated.
