Abuelita

Abuelita is an older woman and is
Esperanza's grandmother.

Abuelita loves to crochet.

Abuelita had to stay in
Mexico because of her ankle.

Miguel

Miguel was also a servant
at El Ranchos De Las Rosas.

Miguel used to be Esperanza's crush
when she was little.

Miguel is patient and smart because
he teaches Esperanza how to clean.

Hortensia

Hortensia is one of
Mamas best friends.

Hortensia is a very nice and friendly
person.

Hortensia is a Zapotec indian from Oaxaca.

Tio Marco

Tio Marco is the mayor of
Aguascalientes but follows his
brother instead of his brother following
him.

Tio Marco is Papa's step-brother.

Isabel

Isabel is Juan and Josefina's
oldest daughter.

Isabel usually takes care of Lupe
and Pepe.

Isabel is very peppy and talkative.

Silvia

Silvia works at the mexican
camp.

Silvia is Isabel's best friend.

Josefina

Josefina is a plumper woman
and is very poor, like most people at the time.

Josefina is Isabel, Lupe and Pepe's mother.

Josefina is Juan's wife.

Mama (Ramona)

Mama usually wears her hair
in a bun and looks like Esperanza.

Mama is confident to start a new life.

Mama loves to crochet, like Abuelita.

Papa (Sixto)

Papa and Esperanza have a
very close relationship.

Papa was very kind and peaceful.

Papa's and Alfonso's families were
not Master-Servant relationship, it was like family.

Alfonso

Alfonso is the father of Miguel and
was a servant at El Rancho De Las Rosas.

Alfonso was described as a long
face like a dogs would be.

Alfonso was Papa's good friend and they felt like family.

Tio Luis

Tio Luis is a bank president in Mexico
but is looking into a career in politics.

Tio Luis was looking into a job in politics
because Mama was a hiigh rank in the town.

Tio Luis proposed to Mama because he wanted a
higher vote in the town.

Carmen

Carmen is a stranger Mama
met on the train.

Carmen is a peasant and she is
very poor, but has eight children.

Carmen gives money (though little)
to the poor even though she can barely
afford to feed her family.

Carmen is very collected and sure
about her life.

Marta

Marta is a girl from the Mexican
camp who goes on strike to get
better housing.

Marta likes Miguel and is jealous of
Esperanza because of all the attention
Miguel gives her.

Marta is very rude to Esperanza all
the time.

Juan

Juan is Alfonso's brother and helped
them get intothe United States.

Juan is Isabel, Lupe,and Pepe's
father,and Josefina's husband.

Lupe and Pepe

Lupe and Pepe are
twin babies who are
Juan and Josefina's children, and
Isabel's siblings.
