Section #3: The Value of Oral Language
Every Student can Help
Encourage all students to stay engaged in helping newcomers learn along with them. Try to always provide a helping hand. English speaking can communicate with ELLs with positive attitudes.
The Silent Period no Cause for Alarm
Being quiet is normal. Some learn by listening and by watching others. Students are sometime more comfortable working in small groups.
Create a Supportive Environment
Create a supportive/positive learning environment for students where they are aware mistakes are accepted as part of the learning process.
Provide positive feedback, address all students, engage learners to make connections to their interests to build their knowledge and skills.
Errors: Handle With Care
Constantly correcting ELL can limit his or her development, increase anxiety, and discourage participation.
Respectfully correct students by: providing feedback on certain areas, provide examples, and continue working on language structure.
Encourage Partnerships and Cooperative Learning
Partnering ELL students with a supportive peer can ease their integration into the class and classroom discussions. This allows them to practice their oral skills in English and receive feedback to promote language acquisition.
