Topic 4
Modular Design Concept
Introduction
Conventional - design from ground up
machine built from different modules capable of certain operation/process
Can be design-in house / standard purchased from external soruce
Machine modules made up of standard machine elements & customised parts and components
What is it?
reusable engineering - portions of previous designs used as new designs.
Technique :functions designed in modules combined in subsequent designs. Integrates standard workstation to perform tasks.
Manufacturing : assembled by "building blocks" modules
Strategy : General usefulness for whole of module families' design for future products.
Example : Slide Module ,Conveyor Module,Pick and Place, Drill head module
Advantage
Proven design/Fully debugged
Known Specifications
Shorten overall design time (Standard)
Remove design uncertainty
Lower inventory and engineering cost
Faster delivery time, quick time to market
Ease of upgrading, scalable ,similar product available
Disadvantage
Larger Machine Size
Costly
Constraint by workstation specification
Proprietary core technology(unknown to standard manufacturing as we did not do it by ourselves)
General function (does not allow creativity)
