Its structure is
WH word+did+subject+verb+ complement
what did you do last week
where did you go yesterday
For the presence of the auxiliary(did) the verb goes in the present tense
When Who? - Whose? - Que? - Which? are used as a subject,
the sponsors do / does and did are not set.
When who / whom - what - which is used as an object, the
auxiliaries do / does and did are put.
