Classification of Living Things

Living organisms are classified into various groups based on their characteristics. Animals are divided into invertebrates and vertebrates. Invertebrates, such as insects, typically have three pairs of legs and segmented bodies.

-have 3 pairs of legs -bodies made up of 3 parts : head, thorax and abdomen -have a pair of antennae on their heads -some have 1 or 2 pairs of wings

e.g., bees, ants, butterflies

Fish

-have wet skin -are usually covered with scales -have fins for swimming and keeping balance -breathe with gills

e.g., clown fish, sharks, salmon

Birds

-have feathers -have a beak -have a pair of wings and a pair of legs -breathe with lungs

e.g., pigeons, ducks, penguins

Reptiles

-have dry skin -have dry and hard scales on their bodies -breathe with lungs

e.g., tortoises, snakes, lizards

Amphibians

-have moist skin -do not have scales -the young live in water; adults mainly live on land adults breathe with lungs and skin

e.g., frogs, salamanders, toads

Mammals

-have hair on their bodies -feed their young with milk breathe with lungs

e.g., monkeys, bats, dogs, whales
