Rocks Classification

Rocks are classified into three main types based on their formation processes: metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous. Metamorphic rocks are formed under intense heat and pressure, altering their original structure.

Rocks Classification

Origin of rocks

list the types of rock?
Metamorphic rocks

they are formed from other rocks

Sedimentary rocks

are formed from other rocks that are broken into small particles and moved by erosion (wind or water)

Igneous rocks

are formed from the cooling of magma or lava

its how the rock were formed
3- heat and pressure

Example:Metamorphic rocks

The pressure will push rock into the deep earth crust. And the heat from earth crust will cause the rocks to change shape, color, grain, and crystal sturctuer.

2- erosion and layering

They are small rocks formed over long periods of erosion, and layering involves several steps (by the wind and water).

This results in small rock and particles squeezed or cemented together, and giving us a layered rock

Example: Sedimentary rocks

1-magma

They are formed from the deep layers of the earth layers. Once the magma bursts outside of the layers and comes to the surface. For instance, voulcanos, and the cooling of the magma or lava.

example: Igneous rocks

Lava is magma that reaches the earth’s surface

Color

rocks come in all sort of colors

Minerals composition

Rocks are made of more than one mineral

Grain

3- Pattern--> rows, waves, swirls, beads or random patterns
2- Shape --> smooth, rough, round jagged
1- Size--> large, small

Texture

what determines the rock texture?
Pattern of rock grain
Shape
size
Define rock texture?
its how the rock looks and feel
