STEP Continua

The STEP ongoing assessment tool consists of continua to support ESL/ELD teachers, classroom teachers, and school leaders in meeting the needs of their English language learners.

Measurable Scale: Track student progress in various strands following the 6 STEPS.

Provide modifications and accommodations if necessary, to support student learning across the curriculum.

Determine placement in STEP continua and determine instructional strategies necessary, as well as helpful resources needed or recommended to aid in student reaching complete independence and fluency.

Provide ongoing recommendations and communications with stakeholders. Share information based on student assessment and observations with future educators and parents.

Gather evidence and document information based on student's strengths and supports for assessment.

Determine student's language proficiency and literacy development.

Determine appropriate placement.

Learn of student's background history, including hobbies and passions.

Collect a writing and reading sample (in L1 and L2).
