How do we create outlines?
Outlines are ordered based on numbers and letters
I. Roman Numeral
A. Capital Letter
1. Standard Numeral
a). lowercase letter with parenthesis
II. New main topic? Back to Roman Numerals!
Why do we do outlines?
We outline to keep our readings organized
Academic papers follow a certain order
1. Main Idea
2. Supporting Details
3. Additional support
When we outline, it helps us to discover the important details and to decide what details are unimportant.
Important things to remember
Outlines are about ORGANIZATION
They follow the order of the story, they do NOT jump around from the beginning to the end to the middle, and back to the beginning.
Outlines are NOT paragraphs
Information in outlines should be short, clear, and can be fragments.
Outlines are about CONTENT WORDS
An outline heading is not generally a short preposition, article, modal verb, pronoun, or conjunction
