The trail between Magome
and Tsumago
is a well maintained section of the former Nakasendo, the route that ran along the Kiso Valley
and connected Tokyo
with Kyoto
during the Edo Period
. The trail is not difficult and is well marked in English and Japanese
. It is about 8 km long and should take two to three hours to complete at a leisurely pace.
The trail leads through the countryside and passes right alongside the houses and fields of local residents. The trail also intersects with the road and hikers must tread along asphalt for some portions. Despite this, a walk along the Magome-Tsumago trail is a highly enjoyable part of visiting the Kiso Valley
. From Magome to Tsumago involves less uphill walking than the opposite direction.

The Hida Folk Village is a 30 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride from Takayama Station in the opposite direction of the city center. The "Sarubobo Bus" provides connections every 20-40 minutes for 210 yen per ride or 620 yen for a one day pass. There is also a special discount ticket that combines the bus round trip from Takayama Station with admission to Hida no Sato for 930 yen.
Takayama's old town can be reached in a ten minute walk from Takayama Station.
Viewpoint
The viewpoint above Ainokura is a five to ten minute walk up the mountain. The trail begins behind the information building at the parking lot, goes through a few fields and connects with a small road. If you continue up the hill on the road you will be rewarded with nice aerial views of the village.

Tsuka no Ma (formerly known as Shoya no Yakata) is located on a hillside in the northern part of Yufuin where large steam clouds from hot spring sources can be seen raising into the air. Amano Yasukawara is about a ten minute walk from Amano Iwato Shrine. Follow the road for a few meters until a path leads down to and along the river to the cave.

There are beautiful views all along the way and at some points on the trail you can look practically straight down to the river below. Steak Land Kobekan is one of the most famous Kobe steak restaurants among locals and foreign visitors in Kobe.
The lunch set is from 1,080 to 3,180 yen(Tax excluded).
The must eat lunch set here is Kobe beef steak lunch (150g) for 3,180 yen.
The meal comes with your choice of beef, soup, vegetables, toasted garlic, and rice or breads,and you can have a refill of rice if you want.

Namafu is a traditional Kyoto delicacy that uses highly refined wheat gluten and mochi rice flour. It is a popular meat substitute alternative to soybean based food and is typically eaten by the Buddhist monks in Kyoto or those who want a vegetarian meal. It has a chewy, stringy like texture that closely resembles meat. If you close your eyes and try hard enough, it is pretty much like eating a piece of meat but much healthier.
Senmaizuke is a delicious traditional Kyoto pickle made from a local white turnip root called shogoin. The turnip is thinly sliced and seasoned with sweet vinegar, konbuseaweed and togarashi pepper. Senmaizuke means “thousand layer pickle” and the thin disks of pickle are super crunchy with a sweet and sour taste.
Kyo-gashi are the traditional Japanese sweets that were made for the Imperial family and nobility in Kyoto to enjoy with their tea. While Japanese sweets called wagashi are enjoyed throughout the country, those from Kyoto were crafted with an extra level of artistry into elaborate shapes such as flowers, leaves, and more. Each of the sweets are named after a line from traditional Japanese poetry, which is then incorporated into the shape and flavor of the confectionary. As a result, Kyo-gashi are said to be enjoyed with the eyes, mouth, and ears.
Nama yatsuhashi is a modern unbaked version of the yatsuhashi sweet that has been sold since the 1960s, and is one of the most interesting things to eat in Kyoto. Rice flour dough is kneaded with cinnamon sugar and rolled out flat, then cut into small squares. Each square is dusted with a sweet toasted soybean flour called kinako, covered with a small dollop of sweetened adzuki red bean paste, and then folded over into a triangle for a distinctive shape. The filling or flavor of the rice flour dough may vary, inducing cinnamon and red bean, matcha, black sesame, chocolate, strawberry, peach, and other flavors. Yatsuhashi senbei are a traditional sweet that were first made to commemorate a famous Japanese koto player from the 17th century named Kengyo Yatsuhashi. After his death, these rice crackers were sold neared Shogoin temple, so they’re also known by the name “Shogoin Yatsuhashi”. Yatsuhashi senbei are made by pounding rice into a thin cracker shaped like a koto instrument, which is then toasted on a hot plate and flavored with a bit of cinnamon and sugar. I walked the Choishi Michi trail with my husband and found it to be a beautiful journey. We completed the walk from the Kudoyama train station to Daimon Gate in 6.5 hours. We likely could have cut this time even shorter if we had better information about how to reach the Jison-in temple from the Kudoyama platform. It is helpful to know that once you get off the train at the station it is a 1.5 km walk through the town of Kudoyama before you arrive at the Jison-in temple. Once you leave the station and head into Kudoyama, there are many signs that indicate the direction to the Jison-in temple and the Choishi Michi trail. After the initial rapid elevation gain on pavement, the trail becomes dirt and relatively flat (one area of gain just outside Yadate) until the final steep push to Daimon gate.
