Los hábitats de agua dulce como los lagos, ríos, arroyos, humedales y acuíferos albergan una increíble proporción de la biodiversidad mundial: más del 10% de todos los animales conocidos y aproximadamente el 50% de todas las especies de peces que conocemos en la actualidad. Sin embargo, a pesar del papel masivo que el agua juega para las personas y la naturaleza, es un recurso sorprendentemente limitado. Menos del 1% del agua del mundo es fresca y accesible.
