Core Patient Variable
Note the pt.'s age:

- Elderly must be screened for bone density
Pregnancy
Asians have a longer duration of action
Pharmacodynamics
Selectively and irreversibly
inhibits the proton pump
Inhibits the final phase of gastric acid production through supression of the parietal H +, K + ATPase system
Inhibits both basal and stimulated
acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus
Increases gastric pH
Pharmacokinetics
Food effects the absorption rate,
but does not effect the extent of absorption
Highly protein bound
High first pass effect
Half life = < 2 hrs
Metabolized through P-450 system
Best absorped in the smal intestine
Pharmacotherapeutics
Heartburn
GERD
Ulcers associated with H. pylori
