BEATRICE PRIOR
Veronica Roth
DIVERGENT
FEELINGS
BEFORE
SHE FEELS INSECURE, YET SHE KNOWS THE DECISION IS ONLY HERS.
It’s my choice now, no matter what the test says. Abnegation. Dauntless. Erudite. Divergent.
A new place, a new name. I can be remade here. “Tris,” I say firmly.
I am selfish. I am brave.
AFTER
SHE LEARNS TO ADAPT AND ACCEPTS HERSELF.
“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
“First jumper--Tris!”
CAUSE
FINALLY SHE DISCOVERS HER TRUE IDENTITY.
“We believe that preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear.”
There is power in controlling something that can do so much damage--in controlling something, period. Maybe I do belong here.
t will be difficult to break the habits of thinking Abnegation instilled in me, like tugging a single thread from a complex work of embroidery. But I will find new habits, new thoughts, new rules. I will become something else.
BEHAVIOR
BEFORE
It’s my choice now, no matter what the test says. Abnegation. Dauntless. Erudite. Divergent.

AFTER
I throw my arms out to the side and imagine that I am flying... My heart beats so hard it hurts, and I can’t scream and I can’t breathe, but I also feel everything, every vein, and every fiber, every bone and every nerve, all awake and buzzing in my body as if charged with electricity. I am pure adrenaline.

CAUSE
I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent.
