I think the artist was trying to show longing, because the bird is looking around, possibly for something it wants.

The painting uses emphasis, balance, and proportion. The bird is emphasised- it is painted brighter than the rest of the scenery, and is the first thing you see when you look at the painting. The size of the bird, relative to the river and rocks, demonstrates proportion, and increases the feeling of emphasis. The bird is more or less placed in the centre, so the painting is balanced between the left and right side of it.

The artist has used lines to create the shapes of the rocks and the bird. The artist has shaded many different colours together to create textures, and the size of the rocks and the river show space and distance.
