What does long division look like?

Long Division Words

When we talk about long division you might hear words that are new to you but they all tell you something important about the numbers you are working with.

Remainder

Some numbers can't be divided into equal group and there will be numbers left over. This number is called the remainder.

Quotient

The quotient is the answer to the division problem. It is the number of things in each group. The quotient is written on top of the division symbol.

Divisor

The divisor is the number of equal groups you are cutting in to. It is on the outside of the division symbol and is usually the smaller of the two numbers.

Dividend

The dividend is the number that you are cutting into equal groups. It is the number on the inside of the division symbol and is usually the bigger of the two numbers.

What is Long division?

Long division means you are taking a large number that might have many place values (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands) and cutting that number in to equal parts.
