The Protestant Reformation initiated a period where individuals began to question the Roman Catholic Church's authority, leading to a quest for personal religious understanding and broader knowledge.

Another popular theory of this time was that one is born their own unique individual and should have the freedom to do as they choose
Rousseau's Philosophy

Rousseau's philosophy was that the society around one's self is what corrupts a life. Humanity in general is good.

Voltaire's Philosophy

Voltaire's philosophy was that human happiness depended on the society improving and the advancement of science.

Empirical proof was proven evidince of why something "was" or how something worked. This is the proof people sought after during this time. This is why so many new things and theories were discovered and invented during the Enlightenment.

People began to realize the flaws in the Roman Catholic Church

The quest for knowledge began

After realizing that the Roman Catholic Church was not all it was made out to be, people began to realize that they were allowed to pursue their own relationship with God instead having to pay for most of the things the Catholic Church said they had to do in order to get into Heaven. This made me eager for more knowledge.

Developments in economics and politics

More people were becoming educated
With education, people became more intruiged with the world around them

The Thirty Years War

Created feelings of resement against warfare and nationalism
People began to think of different solutions for their problems which led to the changes in politics and economics

Two of these people included John Cormenius and Hugo Grotius. They believed that they could avoid another horrific war by trying to find other solutions. This led to changes in government.
