On-to-Ottawa Trek
During the great depression, the federal canadian government sanctioned the creation of a system of unemployment relief camps. Men could get jobs that were physically demanding labor in exchange for room-and-board.

Regina Riot

2000 trekkers had reached Regina. They felt that relief camps were wrong. So at a public meeting the Regina police and RCMP tried to arrest them. It caused people to panic and a lot of destruction. Trekkers used the freight trains when they went home. The next federal government with Bennett was tossed out and the relief camps closed.

Relief camps
Unmarried men rode freight trains across the country looking for work. General Andrew McNaughton suggested that relief camps be set up in remote locations such as B.C and Ontario. men who didn’t have jobs worked to carry out other manual labor with not enough salary. So camps staged a work out to demand better working conditions and wages. They walked or hitched rides to vancouver. Also they jumped on freight trains to take their case to the prime minister in ottawa.
