Battle of Cut Knife

Battle of Batoche

Cause: Riel was not happy with Dumont's progress against the government. Riel told Dumont to stop the guerilla campaign and defend Batoche.

Effect: This turned out to be a military mistake and Riel was forced to surrender. Riel got arrested and Dumont fled to the U.S.

Riel's Execution

Cause: MacDonald wanted Riel to be hanged (for treason and later was)

Effect: Since lots of people in Quebec looked up to Riel, MacDonald lost a large amount of votes from Quebec.

Battle at Fish Creek

Cause: Thomas Quinn, an Indian agent, treated the Cree badly.

Battle of Duck Lake

Cause: The Buerella method worked always worked during battles

Effect: In the Battle of Duck Lake, when Dumont used that method, it lead to victory.

Macdonald's Advantages

Cause: The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was almost completed.

Effect: The North-West Mounted Police formed in 1873 can be sent to fight Riel's troops quickly.

Cause: Riel came back to Canada after hiding in the U.S. for a few years. MacDonald took this chance to take down Riel.

Effect: Riel was arrested and later hanged.

Riel's Return

Cause: The Métis fear that they might lose their land again just like how they lost their land during the Red River Resistance in 1869.

Effect: Louis Riel comes back from the U.S. to help the Métis get their land back. Cree chief Big Bear and Blackfoot chief Crowfeet were prepared to support Riel.
