Reagan’s election was influenced by several long-term and short-term factors. His campaign effectively questioned the economic progress under the current administration, resonating with many Americans who felt worse off than before.

"Are you better of than you were four years ago" Reagan said knowing most Americans would say no.

Reagan supported strong military and had faith in traditional values

Moral Majority focused on Christian values and religious goals founded by Reverend Jerry Falwell

opposed Engel v. Vitale and Roe V. Wade

great society made poverty worse

conservatives believed the government taxed to heavily and spent to much on wrong programs

reduce taxes and limit government on pubic industry

inflation, the Iranian hostage crisis, and the soviet invasion of Afghanistan were reasons to not reelect Carter and to elect Reagan

Reagan opposed big government

affirmative action contributed to discrimination

conservatives complained about unfunded mandates or programs required but not funded by the federal government

conservatives felt liberal policies were responsible for the stagflation

conservatives felt that a large government would hurt economic growth and individual growth.
