How Does a Person Overcome Adversity?

Overcoming adversity involves several key strategies, including maintaining an open mind, learning from others, and acknowledging the problem at hand. Being open-minded allows individuals to actively search for evidence that may challenge their beliefs or plans, and to consider this evidence fairly.

Argument 4: Be Open Minded - is the willingness to search actively for evidence against one's favored beliefs, plans, or goals, and to weigh such evidence fairly when it is available.

To Others Stories/Experiences
When you are open to learning from others, we benefit from their experience as well as our own and we can learn from their wisdom and knowledge. Research shows that we learn best from others when do certain things."Learning is a two-way street."
"Simply talking about my problems out loud to people that supported me was freeing." (Laura 2)
Who To Ask For Help
When asking for help you can go to your family, close friends, trusted adults, colleagues, guidance, doctor, and you can also use trusted hotlines. By talking to people, you can talk to people that might understand what you are going through and might also relate to. By having this support, it can help a person overcome adversity because it might just be stress and by being opened minded to the resources, it can help you push through potential challenges.
How To Ask For Help
Many people think asking for help is hard; this is because they are afraid they will be rejected or judged. When asking for help you must decide who is the best person to talk to, who would you feel most comfortable talking to?; pick a time and place; choose a good time and somewhere you feel comfortable, so you can talk uninterrupted in a relaxed environment. Once you are able to ask for help, it will help someone overcome adversity because it gives them a support system, someone to rely on and help them overcome such challenges they might be going through.

Argument 1: Positive Mindset/Thinking - is the practice of focusing on the good in any given situation. It can have a big impact on your physical and mental health. That doesn't mean you ignore reality or make light of problems.

Take Responsibility
Taking responsibility will help you have a positive mindset because rather than looking around for someone or something else to blame, you must accept that you are in charge of what is going on. Some ways you can take responsibility are as follows: stop blaming others, when you are too busy pointing fingers at others, it becomes difficult to see your own faults; stop complaining, change your perspective, own your mistakes because by doing these things it does not get you anywhere and you are not moving forward.
"Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health" (Mayo Clinic Staff 1).
Surround Yourself With Positive People
Surrounding yourself with other positive minded people can help you stay in a positive mindset as well. Additionally, by having this support, you will have people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways; having a negative attitude will not help your mindset and will not help or change the outcomes of the difficulties you are going through.
Practice Self Care
Self care is when you look after yourself and working on your mental health and also physical health. By practicing self care it allows you to think positively because you are doing activities that make you happy and with a positive mindset, it helps a person overcome adversity in their life.

Argument 3: Acknowledge the Problem - a fact or a situation, you accept or admit that it is true or that it exists.

Break things Down
Facing adversity and setbacks can become very overwhelming. These can often be unexpected circumstances that suddenly knock us off balance. By being able to break the situation down can help a person overcome adversity because you are able to acknowledge the problem by being able to recognize the situation you may be facing and how to find a solution to these challenges.
Take Positive Actions
Taking positive action will help a person overcome adversity because it is a way to acknowledge the problem. Taking a positive action means doing things that are good for you and also others within your community. For example, if you are facing adversity at work and you want to overcome these challenges, one can acknowledge that exercise is a good cooping mechanism and by taking this positive action you are overcoming the adversity.
"Know that you’re not alone in this and people around you want to help you" (Bella Ramsey, actor and YoungMinds ambassador 1).
Ask Questions
Being able to acknowledge that your setback is a problem that can be solved then effectively working on solving this problem by asking yourself questions will help a person overcome adversity because by asking questions such as what went wrong? What is the problem here? What can be done to improve the situation? What am I potentially missing that could be of value? will help a person overcome adversity because they are able to realize their setbacks and challenges and can then learn from them and mentally grow as an individual.

Argument 2: Practice Self-Compassion - Self-compassion entails being warm and understanding toward ourselves when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate, rather than ignoring our pain or flagellating ourselves with self-criticism.

Forgive Yourself
Forgiving yourself is how a person can overcome adversity because once you learn how to do so, you will not be as hard on yourself. Self-forgiveness is not about letting yourself off the hook nor is it a sign of weakness, instead it simply means that you accept the behavior, you accept what has happened, and you are willing to move past it and move on with your life without letting past events tear you down.
"Dealing with adversity can become a very positive and nourishing experience that can lead to massive growth and development." (Sicinski 1).
Be True To The Self
Being true to yourself is being the best version of yourself and being honest with yourself. How do you know who this person is? When you know who you are, you know what you need to do, instead of looking for permission from others to do what you already know you ought to do. It allows you to overcome difficulties being thrown at you being a specific sentence or in daily life. Once you know yourself, you will become more confident, you will understand your purpose, and you will begin making a bigger impact on the world.
"When people treat themselves with compassion, they are better able to arrive at realistic self-appraisals, which is the foundation for improvement. They are also more motivated to work on their weaknesses rather than think “What’s the point?” and to summon the grit required to enhance skills and change bad habits." (Chen 2).
A Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is about letting yourself to learn something new and developing yourself. In this world, failure is not growing. Failure is not reaching for things you value; the effort is what makes you talented and smarter. By growing your mindset, it allows you to overcome adversity because although challenges and difficulties can be tough, they make us who we are today and we get to grow from these which makes us stronger.
