During the 1930s, the economic downturn known as the Great Depression had widespread effects on society, notably influencing demographic trends and the labor market. Many families chose not to have children during this period, resulting in a smaller generation.

Meaningful Work

Meant how much work immigrants put into being successful.
This occured when people actually cared about their work. They tried their hardest to become succesful in what they do, and they rarely give up. Many people put meaning into everything they do, and this helps you become more succesful with your work and jobs.

Demographic Trough

The name was given during the decade of the 1930's.
This meant that families did not have children, the generation that was born during this time was smaller than all of the others.
This was a response to the economic hardship of the depression.

New York City's public schools were much smaller than all of the others during the 1930's.

"Jewish", immigrant backround.

The name came from the Countries to whereever they went to. Thats the name that was given to them, because they had no jobs, and looked fairly different than everyone else.
Jewish people were treated differently throughout the book. People were violent towards them, and treated them like they were nothing.
Immigrants couldn't recieve jobs, were discriminated against, had no money, and were called names based on the way they look, or the accents that they had.
