The evolution of electronic media has significantly altered the landscape of information dissemination and content creation. Historically, media was controlled by gatekeepers who decided what information the public could access.

Chapter 1. An overview of Electronic Media

Convergence, Proliferation, and Resilience of Media.

Resilience: The ability to adapt and exist Media has been very resilient throughout the many years. It's fast paced, ever-changing, but it many still hold out to this day. Even to this day media is always adapting to new and better things.
Proliferation: Distributing media to wide variety of platforms Because of the proliferation of media, it really is everywhere. From a gas station to a doctor's office, this is called location-based media. Portable equipment also counts in proliferation. Watching something on the go or playing helps distribute media even more.
Convergence: Bringing together all sorts of media and facilities An example of this would be when two companies want to cover their bets they would merge with each other, such as with Direct-TV and Spectrum Internet.

1990's - 2010's Analog: Represented by something physical Digital: Represented by 0's and 1's
1970's - 1980's Syndicators: People who distributed movies, reruns and other fares Independent: Stations not owned or helped by other companies. Affiliation: A pact where a network allows the station to air when there are no network programming. Narrowcasting: Where cable networks attract a specific audience rather than a large one
1950's - 1960's CATV: Community Antenna Television 3-D: Three dimensional Distant signal importation: The process of a cable system sending wired signals from a distant TV station ARPANET: A network of computers developed by the defense department in the 1960's.
1920's - 1940's Broadcasting: Using radio for entertainment purposes Format: Programming genres such as drama, comedy, news, etc. Freeze: The FCC commissioned this to tv authorizations in order to organize the frequencies

Democritization of Media

Public Access Many TV and Radio stations have public access to their listeners or anyone. People can call the radio show to request a song, talk for a bit, or even call a TV station for about the same thing.
User-generated Content Rather than a network or company producing media it can be from a normal citizen. Video taping yourself for a birthday, sending messages, or making videos/commentary and publishing it onto the web are all accounted for in User content.
Paradigm Shift of Media The change from mostly private to majority public was a big change in media, gatekeepers(individual who would choose what information to leak out and what to keep hidden) now have much less power than before.
Democratization The act of making something public for all to see or own.

Functions of Media

Acting as a Watchdog Learning about what others are doing, or even our government, media covers all of it. Reporters or journalists would dig into corrupt government or issues abroad and inform us of what is truly happening. Media is practically always everywhere, watching.
Transmitting Cultures and Customs Media allows the exchanging of cultures and traditions between everyone. However it does bring up the controversial stereotype topic.(where people get a, usually false, opinion on what a certain race or culture that a person is from is like)
Aiding Commerce Advertisements are also very important to media. It practically makes up the whole costs of productions for shows, videos games and radio. You never know if you'll ever need an item or a service, and the commercials allow us to also enjoy programs and games.
Disseminating News, and Information As much as fun entertainment is, information is very important as well. From urgent news regarding terrorists to updates about the weather, we can't go without the regular news and info about the world.
Presenting Entertainment The biggest form of function of media to this date. About every single person uses media for entertainment purposes. TV, radio, and video games all give entertainment.
