1980 Election: Conservatives and Reagan

Conservatism gains strength

As the population moved south, Republican ideals started to resonate more. Finically struggling liberals started to switch parties as the conservatives start to talk about getting money to the people.
Religious groups also started to help gain strength of the Conservative Movement. A group by Reverend Jerry Falwell, founded the Moral Majority. This group believed that the traditional family is of utmost value. They condemned the Equal Rights Act and homosexuality and did not like the Engel v Vitale Decision. They registered new 2M voters who did not usually take part in politics.
The New Right starts to make accusations that stagflation is the result of all the wasteful spending that the Liberals have been making on social programs. They complained about unfunded mandates which were programs that were required but not funding. Lastly, they blame the Great Society programs for the deterioration of traditional families given that more people were having children out of wedlock
Liberals lose appeal: Due to Vietnam many people were divided on programs like the Great Society. Counter Culture had created a separation between Midwestern Americans and the traditional Christian south. Lastly, Watergate and Energy Crisis had made the public lose faith in their government. The economy failed and programs that favored the war on poverty were not attractive and conservative policies resonated more.
