Hypertension

WARFARIN SODIUM
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed warfarin to treat his hypertension.

This medication is an anticoagulant which reduces the frequency of clot formation. It inhibits the formation of Vitamin K, which in turn blocks the formation of any thrombus within blood vessels.

Side Effects: bleeding + headaches

Depression

AMITRIPTYLINE
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed amitriptyline to treat his depression.

This medication is a tricyclic antidepressant and analgesic with anticholinergic and sedative attributes. It inhibits the re-uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin which increases their concentration at the synaptic cleft.

Side Effects: tremors + constipation

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

METOPROLOL
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed metoprolol to treat his CHF.

This medication produces a reduction on cardiac output and heart rate. It is a beta-1- adrenergic receptor inhibitor which decreases the cardiac output by producing negative chronotropic and inotropic effects.

Side Effects: tiredness + dizziness

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD)

ADVAIR DISKUS
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed this medication to treat his COPD.

This medication is a long acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonist (LABA). Beta(2)-receptor stimulation within the lungs results in the relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and increased bronchial airflow.

Side Effects: upper respiratory tract infections + headaches

SALBUTAMOL SULFATE
Mr Harvey has been prescribed salbutamol sulfate to treat his COPD.

This medication is a beta-receptor agonist that is used as a bronchodilator. Activation of beta2-adrenergic receptors prompts AMP which in result activates protein kinase A, inhibiting myosin and brings down intracellular ionic calcium levels, causing relaxation.

Side Effects: hypertension + headache

Chronic Lower Back Pain

FENTANYL
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed fentanyl to treat his chronic lower back pain.

This medication produces strong analgesia by activating opioid receptors. It then causes GTP to become GDP, which then results in hyper-polarization of the cell and inhibition of the nerve activity.

Side Effects: constipation + nausea

NAPROXEN
Mr. Harvey has been prescribed naproxen to treat his chronic lower back pain.

This medication works as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory as well as an antipyretic. It blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes which decrease the release of prostaglandins.

Side Effects: stomach irritation + belching
