The fur trade era

Beaver and otter were the most used

The mountains, waterways and cool winters were perfect for the sea otters, foxes, and beavers

Fur Traders learned form Lewis and Clark during the expedition about the supplies that they could potentially receive in return

Natives traded fur among the tribes for thousands of years.

Getting furs to market

Trading posts were built on major rivers for easier access for trade

The fur pelts were so strong in demand, that's all that the traders wanted to trade for.

Missionary Era (1834-1847)

the missionaries soon followed the furtrpers adn traders to the west.

Native Americans helped the trade

Gray persuaded the American Board to send more missionaries to the pacific northwest.

The missionaries hoped to first Christianize the Native Americans and change their social behavior.

The Protestant missionaries chose to construct their missionaries near rivers.

The four fur companies

Four fur companies controlled the fur trading industry

One company was the Pacific fur company

was made by German John Jacob Astor and went on two expeditions and worked with the astorians

The Rocky Mountain Fur Company

Another was the Northwest Fur Company

The Hudson bay Company
