Mean, Median, Mode & Range

r

The goal of this mind map is to provide students with examples, videos, and games on mean, median, mode and range to give them a better understanding. The audience is elementary students grades 2-5.

Mean

What is Mean?

r

Mean: Is the average of numbers. Example: 6,11,7 1.) Add up all the numbers: 6+7+11= 242.) Divide by how many numbers there are. 24/ 3= 8 The mean is 8

Mode

What is Mode?

r

Mode is the number that appears most often. Example: 3, 7, 5, 13, 20, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29. 1.) Rearrange the numbers in order. 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 20, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 562.) Find the number that occurs most often. The mode is 23 because it appears three times.

Median

What is Median?

r

Median is the middle number. Example: 12, 3 and 51.) Rearrange the numbers from smallest to largest. 3,5,12 2.) Find the middle number by crossing of the numbers one by one on each side. 3/,5,/12The median is 5 because it is the middle number. What happens if there is 2 numbers in the middle? Example: 1.) 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 562.) 3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 40, 563.) 21 + 23 = 44.... 44 ÷ 2 = 22The median is then 22.

This is another fun game for students. It helps students understand median by re-arranging the buildings by the different heights.

Range

What is Range?

r

Range is the difference between the highest and lowest values of a set. Example: 89, 73, 84, 91, 87, 77, 941.) Rearrange the orders from least to greatest. 73, 77, 84, 87, 89, 91, 942.) Find the greatest value= 94 3.) Find the lowest value= 73 4.) Subtract 94-73= 21 The range equals 21.
