Impressment
Royal Navy deserters would get aboard U.S ships, the British would come and get them but take U.S itizens as well if they couldn't prove it with a ertifiate of citizenship
USS Constitution and USS Chesapeake were abused by this
The chesapeake affair:
British warship attacked USS Chesapeake and forced surrender-- seized deserters
Jefferson Outraged
The Embargo act of 1807
Prohibited vessels from leaving American ports to go to foreign ports
Advocated as a means of peacable coercion
British was not affected (ports in South America)
LOTS OF LOOPHOLES:
-allowed American ships to be blown off course into European ports
-Napoleon seized ships and claimed he was enforcing the embargo act
hurt American seamen, merchants, and farmers
-fell hardest in New England, forced diversion towards manufacturing
Orders in Council
British regulation which established a blockade of French ports in europe
Napoleon's Response:
-The continential system: said that ships obeying Birtish regulations will be subject to seizure by France

-Broken voyange: American vessels carried sugar from the west indies to American ports and then re-exported it as american produce
