The Grand River groundwater wells ^

About 20 to 25 per cent of Waterloo Region's drinking water is from the Grand River.^

How is it treated

Our water supply after being used goes through many steps to make the water usable again.

The Region of Waterloo is responsible for treating, disinfecting and supplying drinking water. The Mannheim Water Treatment Plant, cleans our water and prepares it for us to use again.

Threats to the water supply

There are a lot of threats to the water supply, a lot which we have part in, what we put in our toilets can affect the water for example flushing expired medications, garbage, chemicals, not environmental friendly cleaning supplies, and more.

What goes down our sewer drains can also affect or water supply again garbage can impact it a lot along with whatever washes down into the drain. Disposal of chemical oils and paints is a big threat, same with fertilizers and chemicals from fields if you live in a rural area have have a farm.
