Fictional stories are a lot easier for students to understand, that is why it is important for students to begin reading nonfiction early.

Having students read and analyze quotes is great in many different ways. Students have trouble understand quotes, especially if they are written in the old english etc.

Primary Sources

For younger ages, they have not yet had experience with primary sources, and quotes will not only be used in Social Studies, but in Language Arts, and students need to understand how to analyze and site primary sources.
Using primary sources can be overwhelming and difficult for some students, and so it is important to have them work with quotes as soon as possible.

Benchmark

Our practice benchmark this year had about five questions with quotes from Hammurabi's code. And a lot of students did not understand the quote because of the way it was written.
Students will need to analyze and read quotes for the benchmark, so having students feel comfortable about reading and analyzing is a great tool for their success.
